MFRFMA Aids Military During COVID-19 Pandemic

MFRFMA Aids Military During COVID-19 Pandemic

The Military Family Relief Fund Mid Atlantic (MFRF-MA) began the support operations for the Maryland National Guard and other military operational elements deployed in support of the COVID-19 Emergency. Our team delivered morale support items to the mobilized elements across Maryland.

Three MFRF-MA Board Members set out on a 795-mile two-day vehicle trip in support of soldiers, airmen and coast guard personnel at 12 locations across the State of Maryland to execute this delivery.

Day One, Thursday, April 9th

Board members used their own truck and MFRF-MA support trailer to pick-up members and supplies. The journey first took them to Ruhl Armory where they delivered Morale supplies such as potato chips, peanut butter crackers, pretzels, Goetz candies and Mary Sue Easter eggs. Afterward the next stop was at the LTG Fretterd Military Reservation where there were three separate deliveries for the Army Operations Center, the Medical group and the Main Armory.

Most MWR morale snack deliveries included the following standard sized drop consisting of: Four cartons of potato chips with 84 bags per carton or overall 336 bags, Six cartons of pretzels with 36 bags per carton or overall 216 bags, Two cartons of peanut butter cheese crackers with 105 packs per carton or 210 individual packs, One package of Mary Sue Easter Eggs, and One package of Goetz candies.

Next they traveled to the Easton Armory where we made a standard morale drop, then a stop at the Salisbury Armory where we made a double standard drop anticipating heavier demand and one less distant trip to that location. The last stop of the day took them to Ocean City, Maryland for an overnight for a delivery and early pick-up early the next day.

Day Two, Friday, April 10

The first delivery was the Ocean City Coast Guard yard where we made a standard morale drop. Also, while in Ocean City, we picked up 1,500 bags of Fishers Popcorn as a COVID-19 Morale donation. Friday’s windy weather created treacherous conditions on the Bay Bridge that mandated a diversion from the planned delivery at FEDEX Field as high winds on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge diverted the scheduled drop to send them around the Chesapeake Bay to Havre De Grace where we made two separate standard sized deliveries: one drop at the Havre De Grace Armory and another at the United States Property and Fiscal Office (USPFO). The fourth and final stop was the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Edgewood Area at the Aviation Armory with a standard Morale drop.

Your Support is Needed

The Military Family Relief Fund Mid-Atlantic will continue to take donations and follow on trips are planned later in April 2020. Please consider donating items or monies to be used for this effort as the soldiers, airmen and coast guard personnel greatly appreciate and need your continued support. Thank you.

6 Ways to Cut Costs During a Deployment

6 Ways to Cut Costs During a Deployment

If you or your family is having trouble financially while your spouse is deployed, it is important to know that you are not alone. Almost a quarter of all military families with active duty service members are young, single-income families and at times must rely on food stamps and other forms of aid.

It is hard enough to be apart from your significant other during their deployment, without the added stress of financial difficulty. Below are six important strategies to implement that will help you financially, especially while your spouse is deployed.

Familiarize Yourself with the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA)

If you need help getting out of your lease in order to relocate due to your spouse’s change of station, the SCRA is a resource that can help you. Under this act, members of the military may be eligible for specific caps on interest rates for loans (like car financing and mortgages) and other debt (credit cards) incurred prior to military service.

Put off Large Purchases

You may need to replace large appliances or buy furniture for your new home, but if possible, try to spend money on only the basics until you can get better footing. Minimizing your spending and finding creative ways to do things will pay off in the long run. If you must lay out a large sum, look for businesses that offer affordable interest free loans over several years, with perks for members of the military.

Weed Out Wasted Time

If you are not able to work full time but should be able to prioritize your schedule to accommodate part-time or temporary work. Think of your time as money – each hour that you spend at the grocery store could be spent making money at work. Finding solutions like taking turns shopping with other military spouses can help free up time so you can work. Staffing agencies are a good resource to use for finding part-time work.

Establish a Realistic Budget

Have money set aside for food, utilities, car expenses, clothing and emergencies. This will take away some of the anxiety of having to make financial decisions for the family on your own while your spouse is deployed.

Go Cash Only

Do not take your debit/credit cards with you when you go out. Use cash to pay for groceries, gas, entertainment and other small expenses. This will allow you to spend only the amount you have available.

Save any deployment pay

If your spouse is eligible for extra pay during deployment, saving this money is key. It is important to put deployment pay into a savings account whenever possible. These additional incomes will serve as a rainy-day fund in case an emergency comes up.

5 Things You May Miss About Military Life

March 9, 2020 by Wayne Everhart Leave a Comment

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.0.6″][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.0.6″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.0.6″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.0.6″]

5 Things You May Miss About Military Life

Imagine three deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, two tours in Korea and some time in Kosovo. Twenty-two years of service in the Army feels like a lifetime for not only the person who served, but their spouse. During a transition from active duty to retirement it is important to think about the things you loved and the aspects of military service you love the most. Some things you may miss most include:

Pride of service.

Military life is not easy, and those who chose to live it (especially for over twenty years) deserve commendation for their commitment. Active-duty service members serve for the love of their country and what it stands for. Once retired you will most likely miss the feelings of contribution to something greater than yourself.

Your Military Home.

There is a special feeling that comes from active duty life. Some of the defining moments like pausing each day to honor the flag, remind you of the values of being an American. Keep some of the traditions you loved from your military lifestyle going in your civilian life.

Friendships & Camaraderie.

Some of the most special aspects of military life are friendships and camaraderie. Forming close friendships served as a source of great support during periods of separation from family and friends. The time spent together for holidays, trips and unit functions brought a level of closeness like that of college roommates and high school best friends. It is important to continue those relationships in civilian life following retirement.

Limitless opportunities.

Thanks to the military lifestyle you have been able to live in or visit foreign countries, immerse yourself in new cultures and languages, and experience more of the world than most. You were given opportunities to participate in professional development programs, meet the countries important leaders, and experience historical moments that civilians do not get the opportunity to experience. These special moments should serve as wonderful memories from your time in active duty that you would not have had if you did not choose a military life.

Your sense of self.

After you leave active duty and re-immerse yourself in civilian life you will have to adjust to a new normal. You may feel like you do not recognize yourself anymore. It will take years to adjust to a new routine in a non-military area.
