Five New Year’s Resolutions for Military Life
Happy New Year! It’s time to get out a piece of paper and write out your New Year’s resolutions. Most often we aim to eat better, lose weight, save money, or be more active. But not all resolutions work for the military lifestyle. It is important to set goals that you can continue beyond January, so it is important to take into considerations all the challenges presented in military life and turn them into a growth experience throughout the year. Here are five examples of perfect resolutions for those living a military lifestyle.
- Travel to 3 new places 3 or more hours away from base. Many people avoid leaving the immediate area where they are stationed. Being in the military gives you the opportunity to see the world and live in areas you never thought you could. Go online and search for interesting places near to where you are stationed. Explore a city, national park, zoo, etc. Just get in your car and go on an adventure.
- Try local cuisine Trying new foods can be frightening, especially if you are stationed overseas. Some of the best foods you will find will be in places where you are stationed. The next time you are grabbing food, consult with a local and step outside your comfort zone. Chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.
- Volunteer with a military organization There are many different organizations that support military members and their families. Their generosity and service help military families in amazing ways. Volunteer opportunities are available and not only help the families or individuals in need, but help you feel a sense of purpose. Visit your local volunteer coordinator on post to find an opportunity perfect for you.
- Get your ducks in a row The military requires a lot of paperwork. Anyone who has experienced a PCS or deployment can become easily overwhelmed by the amount of paperwork needed. But don’t forget about other important paperwork in your life. Take time to create a will and list powers of attorney in case a life event occurs, and it is needed. This is a practical resolution that is important to remember. Reach out to your local JAG office to discuss what paperwork you should have in order should one of life’s unexpected events occur.
- Practice self-care Military life can cause a lot of worry, stress and even depression. Military careers can throw serious curve balls to the person services and their family. It is important that you take care of yourself mentally and physically. Reach out and ask for help if it is needed and practice “self- care” in the good times and the bad. Take a daily walk, a relaxing hot bath, or speak to a counselor. Find a hobby that is fulfilling and just for you. Being intentionally kind to yourself and taking care of your health is the best thing you can do for you and your family.
